Until recently, my money was regularly donated to the charity of “I need to pay my rent and live.”

Now, that I have a bit more, it’s time to start giving back. But where to start? There are tons of lovely organizations, just as many scams, and sometimes it seems like my meager donations won’t make any difference.

So, I turned to readers of my newsletter for advice and they brought the heat!

Here are some wonderful pieces of advice on finding charities/non-profits to support and a long list of places my readers support (that you might like to donate to!).

The First Answers You Need

Esther Zimmer said it’s important to figure out what you want to support and how much you have to give. As I started looking into non-profits, I immediately went into a “they all need my money, I should help everyone, AAAGHHHGHGH!” mode. That’s not helpful.

Instead, focus on what you want to support right now. You can always give more down the line, but for now, keep it manageable. Also, these organizations need more than just a check. If it’s an issue you care deeply about, you’re more likely to give the non-profit the help they need.
